At Remarkable Services, we work with people of all ages, including many high school students in distress. Often, their life story is difficult. In our high school program, we seek to see and accept each student for the authentic person they are.
On this page, you can meet some of the clients helped by our high school program and our counseling services. Of course, names and identifying details have been changed.
Marie started therapy at age 16 in her junior year and continued in therapy for 1½ years through the Remarkable Services’ school-based program. She was referred to Remarkable Services for depression, anxiety, and trauma history. Marie had unresolved grief following the loss of an uncle and a friend who was killed. She had a history of being bullied starting in middle school through high school around racial issues. Before the start of therapy, there was a sharp decline in academic performance, and Marie was in danger of failing (which would have prevented graduation).
School Counseling: Strength-based counseling was able to build on Marie’s skills, including composing poetry and writing stories, participating in school track and field, and participating in the music department. Marie was motivated to do weekly therapy sessions and utilize clinical interventions to support a reduction in depression, anxiety, and unresolved grief. Treatment leveraged joint support with classroom teachers and the therapist in the school-based mental health program to address social/emotional issues. In addition to 1:1 sessions with the client, the parent was contacted by the school counselor and enlisted in ways to support Marie in improving academic performance.
Outcome: As the client opened up, she used her writing skills to create more poetry and she published an article for the school newspaper sharing her story of overcoming years of bullying and depression. The article was well received and opened a school dialogue around issues of bullying and managing depression. Marie reported a reduction in depression and anxiety. She was able to develop coping skills that helped her address unresolved grief/loss and the history of trauma history. She reported no further bullying, being able to advocate for her own needs and a healthier balance of home responsibilities. Marie’s school performance improved and she was able to graduate on time. After graduation, she enlisted in the US Army.
At intake, Christina was a 15-year-old sophomore. She continued in therapy for 2 years through the Remarkable Services’ school-based program and was referred for depression, anxiety, and trauma history. She had a decline in academic performance and was in danger of failing.
Background: Christina, a Mexican American, was witness to domestic violence between parents and parental substance use. She experienced neglect (utilities in the home were often shut off during the winter and there was often a lack of food to eat), physical abuse, and emotional abuse and became the primary caretaker of her younger siblings.
School Counseling: The program engaged classroom teachers and other resources to address the social and emotional issues, including working with social services to support the ongoing needs of the biological mother and siblings in addition to the client. Christina identified an aunt and she and her siblings were able to move with the aunt. The move helped ensure her safety, health, and wellbeing, as well as maintain consistent school attendance.
Outcome: Through school counseling interventions with Remarkable Services, she reported reduced depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms.
Christina developed coping skills such as mindfulness and obtained psychoeducation regarding substance abuse and understanding the cycle of violence/domestic violence and its impact on children. Christina was better able to advocate for her needs, improved her overall self-esteem, received support in balancing home responsibilities, and improved her school performance. She graduated, received a scholarship to attend a community college, and hopes to continue to a 4-year university.
Katie self-identified as White and Asian. She was referred to therapy as a freshman by her Academic Counselor because she attempted to jump off a parking structure after school. Katie had a history of suicide attempts, sexual trauma, loss, and self-harm/cutting. The Remarkable Services’ clinician worked closely with the Academic Counselor to provide a sense of containment while navigating complex issues primarily focusing on high anxiety.
Outcome: Katie was supported with safety planning and trauma-informed interventions and was able to lower stress and increase positive relationships. After referral to the Remarkable Services clinician, there were no further self-harm or suicide attempts.
Roberto, identifying as a Mexican American, was referred by his single mother due to episodes of depression, isolating behaviors and difficulties communicating in the family. He often displayed defiant and occasionally aggressive behaviors in the home toward his mother and older siblings.
Outcome: Roberto initially struggled actively participating in sessions as he reportedly minimized his negative behaviors and often blamed others. With the clinician meeting Roberto where he was at, he gradually began to open up and trust the therapeutic relationship. He began to learn how to utilize physical outlets such as sports and expressive arts as a coping skill and worked on expressing himself in a healthy manner. He started participating in family sessions, with the family reporting improved communication and dynamics. Through psychotherapy with Remarkable Services, Roberto increased his self-awareness and insight and was better able to regulate himself socially and emotionally.
